More on Meyer

As far as I'm concerned, Urban Meyer is one of the greatest coaches in the history of college football. It takes a lot for this Georgia fan to scribe those words in print. But, the man has earned my respect.

Prior to becoming the head coach at Florida, Coach Meyer did something no one else could do. He made us discuss Utah as a possible BCS buster and long shot for national title recognition. His undefeated Utes failed to receive an invitation to play in the BCS Championship Game. But, Meyer emblazoned Utah football with a newly acquired tradition of excellence. To this day, that program is better because of the legacy he carved in Salt Lake City.

In 2004, Meyer was hired as head coach of the Florida Gators. In five
"Swamped-out" seasons, he guided the Gators to 3 SEC East titles, 2 national championships, and 3 BCS Bowls.

As a Georgia fan, I wish the Dawgs would have had more success against Meyer in Jacksonville. But, as an SEC fan, it's a sad day when a coach of his caliber decides to step down. I don't know all the details behind Meyer's stunning resignation. And honestly, it ain't my business anyway. I wish Urban Meyer the best... just not against UGA if he comes back to Gainesville.

Latest i've heard, Meyer will be taking the next year off. Our offensive coordinator will be stepping in as coach until Urban returns.

As far as your poll, "Should UF bring Spurrier back to Gainesville" I have the following thoughts.

The news that Urban Meyer would be stepping down was devastating and still hard to swallow. We have in the last year lost our offensive coordinator (Dan Mullins- Miss. St. Head coach), Defensive Coordinator (Charlie Strong - Louisville Head Coach), and wide recievers coach who is now at LSU.
Along with these coaches, we are losing most of our starters from both sides of the ball. The 2010 season will show a lot of new faces for Gator Nation, and we may have to go through some growing pains.

My initial hopes for replacements as head coach were the following:

1. Steve Spurrier
Would he come back to the swamp? I miss his offense, and I know Gator Nation would welcome him back with open arms. However, he is settled in South Carolina, living in Golf Nation, and on the brink of truely turning that program around. Lastly, is it worth going after him when he is so close to retiring anyways?

2. Bob Stoops
I think he has done a great job at Oklahoma, and he has signed some big recruits for this upcoming season. Maybe bringing him to Gainesville will keep our current commits and bring in some extra high profile talent.

3. Charlie Strong or Dan Mullins
Could we get one of the two guys who helped Meyer build this program back to the Swamp and continue what they created? Both men are outstanding coaches and recruiters.

4. Pete Carrol
He had a rough year this past year, and unless he is in control and knows it was just a hickup, maybe he would want a change of scenary. I like what he has down out west, i'd love to see what he could do in the SEC.

5. Lastly, if you want to really turn college football a loop, how bout that old guy we've hated for so many years that is out of a job? It's hard for me to even type his name into this list, but it would be funny, crazy, and he is the 2nd winningest coach in college football. What if Bobby Bowden dressed up in orange and blue?
