What's on my Mind:

I think I read somewhere that UNC just won their 5th NCAA tournament title. Good for them. I guess they've got some ballers. Now, let's move on to something that actually matters....SEC FOOTBALL. Spring practices have been going on for weeks down in Dixie. This Saturday, Mark Richt's Georgia Bulldogs will be featured on ESPN, as the Red team battles the Black inside of Sanford Stadium at 1:00 eastern time. Admission is free and word on the street is that a ban has been placed on the phrase "Black Out." Keep an eye on RS Freshman Carlton Thomas (RB).

Meanwhile, folks down in Gainesville are dreamin' of a repeat. The '09 Gators will be phenomenal, despite the loss of WR Percy Harvin. With Tebow still at the helm, Florida will likely be the favorite to win next year's BCS Championship Game. I'd like to say their hopes will die in Jacksonville. But...let's be real. The red and black colored glasses are off, maybe even stomped on once or twice in frustration.

Speaking of tirades...The "Ol' Ball Coach" has had a less than stellar coaching career in Columbia, SC. Spurrier's Gamecocks have failed to become a contender in the SEC East, but isn't that to be expected? We're talking about South Carolina. The university is better known for parading Ric Flair around the sidelines, than actually achieving greatness on the football field. Sorry, George Rogers.

Speaking of sorry... Lane Kiffin is an idiot! You didn't hear it first on this blog. You heard it months ago. My mother once told me that a wise man keeps his mouth shut and lets people believe he's intelligent, while a fool opens his mouth and proves his ignorance. Kiffin was reprimanded by the SEC for falsely accusing UF coach Urban Meyer of "cheating" on the recruiting front. Meyer allegedly made phone call(s) to a prospect, while the kid was visiting UT. Who cares? That's allowed under NCAA regulations.

So, how 'bout the SEC West? Saban's Tide rolls 'em all in 09. Young QB Star Jackson doesn't have to put up Heisman numbers. All he needs to do is manage the game, and give the ball to Pensacola's own Trent Richardson. Bama will dominate the west, but will history repeat itself in Atlanta? Who knows? Crazy things can happen in the SEC.

We don't play like champions any more. We play like a bunch of losers. That's all you can say about us. We're not smart enough, we're not tough enough. I don't know what it is.

Boy that Carlton kid looks good. Hopefully it translate to the collegiate level. UGA always has a good array of running backs and seems to operate a tailback by committee approach. Not sure if that is good or bad, but if you have the horses, why not?

Talk is spurrier says he won't coach anywhere other than south Carolina. Do you think the school is satisfied with their record? He is getting old and therefore his name won't be pulling recruits anymore. Playing in the sec, and not having a draw for top talent is set up for failure. I guess what I am getting at is:

How long is spurrier going to be coaching at south Carolina? Will he retire or will the school find someone else?

Also, how bout Houston Nutt and the rebels of ole miss? I have my bets saying they will win the west. Do you think that's valid? Or is my dislike for Alabama and the fact that Trent Richardson chose them over our home state, Florida, getting in the way?

Matt,

Great questions regarding Spurrier's tenure at South Carolina. As SEC fans, we know that Spurrier must be absolutely disgusted by his inability to make South Carolina a BCS contender. I think another year of mediocre football could inspire Ol' Steve to spend more time on the golf course. However, there's always the EGO factor, when it comes to Spurrier. Could he walk away/retire, knowing that he FAILED to live up to expectations in Columbia? I don't know if he posseses that kind of humility.

As for whether or not the school is satisfied with Spurrier's record:
I don't think so, but what can they do? They're South Carolina. After ECU's 3-0 start, including upset victories over Virginia Tech (then #17) and West Virginia (then #8), I thought Skip Holtz could be a possible successor to Spurrier. However, the Pirates lost their next 3 games (all to unranked opponents). After that, I had a change of heart. That being said,
I wouldn't be shocked to see Skip as a candidate to replace him, if Spurrier retires in the near future.

How bout Houston Nutt and Ole Miss?
The Rebels will definitely be a contender in the west. But, can they dethrone Saban's tide? I don't like their chances, but who knows? This squad beat the national champs in their own
house last season.

As far as Trent Richardson goes, I know how you feel. Mark Richt has done an exellent job at UGA, but it pains me to watch phenoms such as Eric Berry, Tray Blackmon, etc leave the state of Georgia.
Due to a lack of depth, Georgia desperately needed to get a big time safety this past signing day. Darren Myles, Jr and Donovan Tate (son of former UGA RB, Lars Tate) both said, "No thanks," to their home town Bulldogs. I know that when you're dealing with such talent rich states such as Georgia and Florida, it's impossible to land all of the good players from your region. But, it is imperative to at least get the elite athletes, especially when there is a need at their position.

It's good to hear from you, man.
On another note, I'm looking forward to the NBA playoffs. Don't know if my Hawks can contain Dwayne Wade, but it should be an intersting series. What's your take?

Later,

Rob.
