Take Risks!

Nothing in life ever comes to those that sit around and wait. Unfortunately for me, I just became enlightened (LOL!). Seriously though, whatever your dreams are, it is up to you to chase them. Nothing ever falls into the lap of a lazy man. I used to play the "what if game," a lot. I also used to blame God for the "hand I was dealt." Well, maybe it's time for me to just shut up and play my cards. Don't get me wrong, I still buy lottery tickets. But, recently I've learned that life is all about controlling your own destiny. You can't do that, if you lack the courage to pursue your dreams. Personally, I've just begun taking small steps toward my own goals. Although it may take awhile for any seeds to be sewn, at least I can take pride in my actions. Be proud of yourself. Believe in yourself. Do something that you enjoy. In the worst case scenario, you will at least have fun participating in your favorite hobby. Take risks, dude. That's what life revolves around. Fear less... live more.

Do or die for DJ?

Thursday night's preseason game at Baltimore could have been the last time you'll see former Dawg, D.J. Shockley, in an Atlanta Falcons uniform. The ultimate team player, especially during his collegiate career, Shockley is very easy to root for. During his days at UGA, D.J. played sparingly behind talented passer, David Greene. He did, however, make the most of his senior season. Finally presented with an opportunity to be the first string quarterback, D.J. led his Dawgs to an SEC Championship in 2005.

As position battles come to an end, it appears as if either D.J. or Joey Harrington will not make the final 53 man Falcon roster. Although returning from a major knee injury, Shockley still possesses skills that Harrington will never have. You see, the former Georgia Bulldog can still "pick em up and put em down" with enough of a burst to turn busted plays into positive yardage. Shockley may need to improve his touch on the ball, but Joey ain't Joe Montana, either. Do or die for D.J.? I believe he did. 7-14 for 97 yards and 1 td.

Are the Gamecocks a threat to steal the East?

So far, Steve Spurrier's coaching career (21-16) at South Carolina has been less than spectacular. Given his previous success at the University of Florida, a few shock waves roared through the conference, when he replaced Lou Holtz in Columbia. However, the Gamecocks have failed to join the Eastern elite, during his regime. Will 2008 be the year that a new dynasty is finally born? With all of the spotlight shining on Gainesville, Florida and Athens, Georgia, can South Carolina sneak up and knock these teams down off of the mountain? It's no secret that the Gamecocks are always one of Georgia's toughest opponents. Added into the equation, is the fact that Spurrier does own one victory over the Gators and Dawgs, while pacing the sidelines in garnet and black. The big question is, does this South Carolina squad have enough talent to take away the prize, that Georgia and Florida already consider their own?

Rasslin' Ain't Real.

Growing up in the 80's, not only was I a "Hulkamaniac", but also a "little Stinger." I had a blond flat top hair cut, and a set of bunk beds that served as the top rope. Looking back, I'm amazed that I didn't break any bones, performing flying elbow drops off of that thing.
Those were much simpler times. As a child, it was easy to believe the venom spewed into a microphone. Still a little intrigued by the "sport," I turn on Rasslin' every once in awhile. Unfortunately, few wrestlers today have the charisma of a Ric Flair, or the charm of the late Junkyard Dog.

Rasslin' ain't real. So what? It's pretty obvious, listening to the modern brawler talk. Only a handful of young guys have enough acting skills to make you believe their shtick. Established veterans, such as Kevin Nash, Steve "Sting" Borden, and the Dudley Boys are a dying breed. Not only are they skilled performers inside the "squared circle," but they are excellent at "selling the act," via the mic. Sadly, time is running out on the old guard. In recent years, we have seen legends, such as "Hollywood" Hogan and "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair fade off into retirement. The Rock moved on to starring in movies years ago, and Steve Austin ain't stunnin' no one, no more.

The younger generation of wrestlers has failed to master their craft. Yes, they can fly higher, and dive through tables, but most lack the mic skills needed to "sell the act." As a result, it is difficult to suspend reality, and believe in them. Especially, when you already know that rasslin' ain't real.

08 Dawgs

So, the Georgia Bulldogs are college football's preseason #1 team. Although I can't fathom the concept of crowning a new king before the first snap, I ain't complainin' either! The question being asked all throughout Dawg Nation is "Can they handle the hype?" The incredibly high expectations have provided much excitement over the start of the 2008 season. Well, maybe some of us fans should just slow down a bit. Injuries are already making an impact on the depth chart. The loss of LT Trinton Sturdivant has caused the O-Line rotation to be reshuffled. Key reserves, LB Marcus Washington and talented young LB Charles White, will also miss the season. But...as far as the Offensive Line is concerned, there's really no need to panic. UGA has one of the nation's premiere line coaches, in Stacy Searels. He will have his unit ready to compete, regardless of what names are on the back of those traditional Georgia jerseys.

During the Mark Richt era, UGA has thrived on overcoming adversity. Yes, injuries are a concern, but they will not have a major impact on the success or failure of this breed of Bulldogs. Look for Chris Davis to become a leader on the Offensive Line, and provide this unit with their missing "rudder." Matt Stafford's poise in the huddle will be the calming presence his young blockers need.

So, what should UGA fans expect from the Dawgs in week one? Well, they all understand that Bulldog bread is buttered with a strong run/play action pass combination. Will the young line be able to provide holes for Knowshon and his fellow running backs? Yes, and you'll see plenty of it. Georgia will dominate both lines of scrimmage, and launch enough bombs to keep the Eagles guessing. Joe Cox and Logan Gray will both get some reps, because the game will be out of reach by the start of the 4th Quarter. Don't expect to see too much razzle, dazzle. OCMB will keep things simple, and save the big guns for South Carolina (or if needed, use them against C.Mich.).

UGA will crush little bro from Statesboro. Go Dawgs!

Are Corporate Owners Bad for Pro Sports?

As an avid sports fan, nothing scares me more than the concept of some large corporation taking over control of one of my favorite teams. While not every owner can be Steinbrenner-like, and spend hundreds of millions on payroll, I am in favor of a more traditional "chain of command." Multiple owners can get tangled up in their own egos and become detrimental to their own success. Not to mention those who own teams for tax purposes, or strictly as an "asset/feather in the cap." That ain't cool. Although there have been some major bumps in the road ("Ruff, Ruff!") I prefer owners such as Atlanta's Arthur Blank. Mr. Blank is a brilliant businessman, who is passionate about his team, and takes pride in the success of his organization. Not only does he strive to provide the fanbase with a winning product, but Mr. Blank believes in doing things "the right way." You don't always find that in professional sports.

Whats' your take?

Will Matt Ryan Get KO'd in 08?

It's been a long time, since the Atlanta Falcons have fielded a strong offensive line. Yes, I remember Warrick Dunn and company leading the NFL in rushing. I also remember that one dimensional offense struggling to consistently put points on the board. Former QB#7 frequently ran for his life on passing downs. Well, the young gun slinger from Boston College ain't no former QB#7! He is far from swift, and not proficient when it comes to his ability to "pick 'em up and put 'em down." If we see a traditionally poor pass blocking Falcons O- Line, dude had better have a quick release. Otherwise, the newest "face of the franchise" might get crushed, and become referred to as Matt Ryan "Leaf."

However, the emergence of second year player, Justin Blalock, and rookie Sam Baker could help to bolster the offensive line. The combination of Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood will provide the Falcons with one of the league's most exciting ground attacks. But... how well can the Offensive Line provide pass protection for their rookie QB? Although Baker, the former USC Trojan, has shown flashes at OT, you can't get too excited about preseason results. Will Matt Ryan get KO'd in 08? I'd ask the Atlanta O-Linemen, but I like breathing without broken ribs. Just kidding, guys.
